As Ryder held a copy of Killers of the Flower Moon in his hands with his feet on the footrest in front of the couch, Anna sat on the other side of the couch, her feet gently touching his thigh. She sat laughing while watching an episode of 30 Rock and eating a bowl of popcorn. “Jack Donaghy and his 54-dollar steaks man. I love this show,” she laughed. “Have you had any issues since your little secret?” she asked, pinching under his rib with a toe.
“You mean the stint they put in my heart? That was no secret, darling, and I would eat Jock Donaghy’s steak anyway, regardless of whatever the doctor told me.”
“But would you watch someone eat a steak? I know you quit smoking, but I catch you. I catch you watching people smoke. It bothers you, doesn’t it?”
After placing his book on the side of the couch, he grabbed Anna’s foot and squeezed, pulling gently. “The reason I watch people smoke isn’t because I want a cigarette. I watch people smoke because I find it relaxing and sexy. I don’t want to smoke, but I want that relaxation they have.”
With her eyes watching the screen and smirking at him, she snickered, “Would you watch me eat an entire steak?”
“I saw a video the other day. In the video, a woman poured all the sauce from two bowls on her tomahawk steak, picked it up with her bare hands, and started eating it like a hamburger, with the juices dripping down her arms and onto the table.”
“That sounds messy.” Anna stuck out her tongue.
“Darling, that’s wife material.”
Anna curled up and crawled into Nathan’s lap, passing the popcorn bowl slowly to the floor. When she reached his lips, she curled her fingers in his hair. “Nathan, do you want me to eat a steak like a sandwich before you? Do you want me to pan-fry up a steak and do that right now? With the butter all over my breasts?” The smile on her face was priceless, seeing a lonely popcorn kernel between her canine and incisor.
“Anna, I would love to watch you cook a steak, but I know if you did, it wouldn’t be worth eating.”
The two laughed. “You’re right and so mean. Why don’t you cook us some steaks?”
“It’s almost midnight, that’s why,” he laughed.
“What about tomorrow?” Anna asked, whispering a kiss.
“I’ll make a trip to the market and get some,” Ryder whispered back.
“Will you take me to the bedroom and make love to me?” she asked.
“As soon as you get rid of that popcorn between your teeth,” Ryder laughed, squeezing her closer for another kiss.
“Okay!” Anna squealed, escaping his grasp.
